Event Series Event Series: NOW ONLINE! Palo Alto Weekly League

NOW ONLINE! Palo Alto Weekly League

April 29, 2020 @ 1:30 pm - 7:00 pm

$20 – $40

Out League has moved online for the time being.  Here is the info you may need to join in.

If you want to get involved in our online games, here are the links that you will need.  We usually meet up in a Google
Doc as the main place to get information on what is happening that day.  We also share information on the game voice
chat network Discord, which allows people to talk to each other and chat while they are running a game.  I sometimes
will post a Livestream of my events so players who show up late can see what we are doing and see how to join a game
that still needs more players.  Once players are on the Google Doc, they usually sign up for a Game Master who they
want to run a quest with.  That Game Master will post a link to their Roll20.net game space which the kids join.  They
also sometimes post a Discord voice link so they can all talk to each other.  Once in the game, they run quests for about
an hour and a half and then return to the Google Doc to see if they want to switch groups or stay on their quest.  We
run about seven to eight hours of quests a day and player can do just a little or all of it if they wish.  Below is the
schedule for games, the links needed to be ready to play, and guidelines for doing so.

Live Action Role Playing is a tremendous teaching tool and capable of dynamic, physically driven learning that transcends the usual boundaries of standard education. Due to the interactive, dramatic, hands on methods used in LARP, teaching is often effortless and fun. Players explore concepts from history, linguistics, political studies, geography, psychology, literature, mythology, engineering, science, mathematics, fine arts, team building, and much, much more in a single session and often don’t even realize they are learning due to the fact that they are the active participant in the process, not the passive receiver.
This event takes place in two parts, weekly, in Palo Alto at Mitchell Park. The first session from 1:30pm-4:00pm and trains players in the game, as well as continues an ongoing story the players themselves are involved in creating. The second session from 4:30pm-7pm continues this story and expands upon it, challenging players to follow through on their projects and connect to those of others. This class provides an after school activity that is social, physical, and mentally challenging in a time when kids more and more are finding sedentary, electronic alternatives to real human interactions. Both sessions involve players making and role playing as characters in a shared imaginary world that spans the Bay Area and has hundreds of players continuously involved in collaborating on the process of storytelling and adventure. These events also tie into the weekend events and other leagues which have been a tradition in the area for the past ten years. Players must learn to battle with safe larp weaponry, solve intricate story elements, role play as a wide variety of monsters and creatures of the world, and manage their resources carefully. LARP is helping transform the lives of children all across the Bay Area and beyond.

Fanwar Camps

(Palo Alto – Fall 2019)

Spring Hours 1:30-4:00pm & 4:30-7:00pm!

Information

Registration: New players can only join on the first event of the month.  All families must pre-register for this event. There are a limited number of spaces available. Registration and payment are required to save your spot. To register fill out registration form and e-mail to christophermelville@fanwar.com or turn in to Christopher Melville at a Fanwar event. Payment may be given to Christopher at a Fanwar event, sent via PayPal at the above email address, or sent in the mail (PO BOX 149, Graton CA 95444).  Make checks payable to Christopher Melville or Fanwar LARP and please write your child’s name on the check as well.

Reminder: We are a group of families that get together to hire a gamemaster. At most events, adults are required to remain on site. HOWEVER: because this event is during the week and is a succession of weekdays, this requirement is being waived for this event only, provided you have emergency contacts on file with the organizer and your child does not pose a significant risk to the flow, safety, or management of the event.  All children who do not have adults on hand to chaperon them must demonstrate that they are responsible and cooperative and cannot leave the premises for the duration of the camp hours with express written permission (see below).

Cost: Players sign up for one month at a time.  They must pay for the entire month on the first event of the month.  Players are not allowed pay for each day they attend, but must make one payment of the total they attend.  If they do not attend all the sessions, they may apply the credit to future events.  Trades for crafting of supplies and repair work is also accepted for those who wish to play a lot but keep the costs down.  See Christopher for projects to do as trade.

Location: The camp is being held at Mitchell Park, in Palo Alto.  We usually meet near the “Push” Statue, but may have to relocate depending on what other events are happening in the park that week.

What to bring: Students need to bring food (if attending both sessions), clothing for variation in the weather, as well as adequate sun protection and good athletic shoes.  Costumes and props are also a wonderful addition to our events.

Food and Water: As mentioned above, food and water are not provided, and students must bring their own food for this event each day if they are attending both sessions.

Schedule: We plan to meet every Wednesday and begin in the afternoon with the first session from 1:30pm-4:00pm and the second from 4:30pm-7:00pm.  Each session is a series of missions, training, and role-playing encounters.  (If you need early drop off or late pickup- contact me)

NOTE: The Payment System has changed.  Players must pay at the start of the month for the whole month (see me if this is a problem for you.  Credit is applied for any days did not attend that month.)  No paying per day.

Dates:

  • March (4th, 11nd, 18th, 25th) New players are welcome so long as they attend from the first day of the month.

  • April (1st,8th,15th,22nd,29th) New players are welcome so long as they attend from the first day of the month.
