Sonoma County LARP Battle League Event
Sonoma County LARP Battle League Event
Saturday, October 10th, 10am-1pm and 2pm-5pm, Willard Libby Park, Sebastopol CA
Cost: $20 a session
We are a group of parents that gets together to hire a game master for Live Action Role Playing sessions across the Bay
Area. We have been doing this successfully for the past nine years and have a wonderful network of kids and adults
sharing in a long tradition of fun and imaginative play. Live Action Role Playing is a tremendous teaching tool and
capable of dynamic, physically driven learning that transcends the usual boundaries of standard education. Due to the
interactive, dramatic, hands on methods used in LARP, teaching is often effortless and fun. Players explore concepts
from history, linguistics, political studies, geography, psychology, literature, mythology, engineering, science,
mathematics, fine arts, team building, and much, much more in a single session and often don’t even realize they are
learning due to the fact that they are the active participant in the process, not the passive receiver.
Battle League: This event focuses on players learning about LARP and how to play it. It is the ideal venue for new
players and those wishing to just try it out for the day. We play variations of capture the flag, feudal lords, mini-
quests, castle battles, and much more. Players will learn how to play safely, at an event, or at home. They will also
learn about the basic elements of larp combat, choosing from a huge supply of larp prop weapons crafted by the game
master, and learning how each is used to best effect. This event focuses on team work, a sports like athletics feel, and
lots of fun!
The Game Master: Christopher Melville has two Montessori Teaching Credentials (for children birth to six as well as six
to nine) and has taught first grade through twelfth grade as well as college courses and can scale an adventure to any
age group and any size. He has a BA in Theater Arts and a BA in Creative Writing, and is a California Credentialed
Multi-Subject Public School Teacher. He has been running these events professionally for the past twelve years and
wrote the book for Fantasy Warplay and has been running his game world Roekron for the past fifteen years
continuously.
Registration: This event is the first in a series that will be continuing in winter. For this first event, no registration is
required before hand. Players can show up the day of to play, provided they all have an adult chaperon in attendance
(see below). The event costs $20 per session. There are two sessions a day (10am-1pm, and 2pm-5pm), and thus the
full day would be $40. Payment may be given to Christopher at a Fanwar event, sent via PayPal at the above email
address, or sent in the mail (see Christopher Melville for current address). Make checks payable to Christopher Melville
or Fanwar LARP and please write your child’s name on the check as well.
Reminder: We are a group of families that get together to hire a gamemaster. At most events, adults are required to
remain on site. All children must have a designated chaperon on hand who will be responsible for them in case of an
emergency. One adult may be in charge of many different players if they wish, so long as they have the contact
information for all their charges. If you cannot stay with your child at the park, or do not have a friend who can do
this for you, talk to the organizers of the event to see if they can connect you up with other people.
Cost: There are two sessions a day, one from 10am-1pm and then another from 2pm-5pm. Each cost’s $20 a session
per person.
What to bring: Students need to bring lunch (if attending both sessions, thought here are also places to eat within
walking distance), clothing for variation in the weather, as well as adequate sun protection and good athletic shoes.
Costumes and props are also a wonderful addition to our events.
