ON! Palo Alto Weekly League (Wednesdays)

October 30, 2019 @ 1:30 pm - 7:00 pm

$20 – $40

10/30/19 Air Quality is looking great.  We are a go for LARP today.  See you all there.

10/29/19 (6:13pm) Wednesday League is on after all (unless the air quality changes dramatically tomorrow).  Check in the morning to be sure we are a go, but assuming the air stays good, we should be there.

10/29/19 UPDATE! We escaped the north bay.  Yesterday, just as I finished announcing the cancellation of leagues this week, the evacuation zone where my house is located was downgraded to evacuation warning, which meant I could return.  I still had no way to get there, due to other evacuation zones. But then, in the late afternoon, the contiguous zone along the Sonoma Coast was downgraded as well, and I now had a brief window of calm weather and a route to get home.  Molly and I made the seven hour journey down Hwy 1, through the eerily empty towns, to our house where we met with our neighbors, packed up all the things we couldn’t replace, got the truck and and trailer, and headed south to power, and better air.  We are now in Palo Alto, staying at my brothers house, and LARP is now only dependent on Air Quality for the coming weekend. Thursday is still canceled, Wednesday is a maybe, depending on Air Quality and Fire developments today, and Helios is back on, as we have indoor spaces to use, as is the weekend as long as air quality is good.  So glad to be where there is power to clean the air.  The combination of smoke and no power to run HVAC systems is dangerous.  I hope everyone else stays safe as well.

10/28/19 Hello All LARP Families-

The Kincade Fire is now only a few miles from my house and all the LARP gear. Unfortunately I was out of town to the north in Fort Bragg getting out of the smoke when the news that the fire was going to cause evacuation due to power outages hit. I had planned to return Sunday, and so I did not move my truck and trailer, and was effectively cut off from returning due to the multiple evacuation orders. I spoke with Sebastopol City Police about getting to my gear, but they said I’m not allowed to cross a mandatory evacuation zone. I cannot get back via Hwy 1, which is closed, Hwy 101 which is on the frontline of the fire, or Hwy 20, as a new fire near my brothers house just erupted on that road. He is now under evacuation warning. While the evacuation warning may be lifted for my house, I still cannot get to my house until roads reopen, and as such I cannot be sure I can do LARP this week. There is too much uncertainty with the access to my supplies, fire danger, and air quality concerns. Thus, all of my events will be canceled until Saturday at the soonest. This means no LARP Wednesday in Palo Alto, Thursday in Sebastopol, or at Helios on Friday. If anything changes I will let you know. Hopefully LARP will be back on in time for Saturday Project League and Sunday Club League.

Take care and wish me luck. Pass this on to all the LARP families you can.

Christopher

Live Action Role Playing is a tremendous teaching tool and capable of dynamic, physically driven learning that transcends the usual boundaries of standard education. Due to the interactive, dramatic, hands on methods used in LARP, teaching is often effortless and fun. Players explore concepts from history, linguistics, political studies, geography, psychology, literature, mythology, engineering, science, mathematics, fine arts, team building, and much, much more in a single session and often don’t even realize they are learning due to the fact that they are the active participant in the process, not the passive receiver.
This event takes place in two parts, weekly, in Palo Alto at Mitchell Park. The first session from 1:30pm-4pm and trains players in the game, as well as continues an ongoing story the players themselves are involved in creating. The second session from 4:30pm-7pm continues this story and expands upon it, challenging players to follow through on their projects and connect to those of others. This class provides an after school activity that is social, physical, and mentally challenging in a time when kids more and more are finding sedentary, electronic alternatives to real human interactions. Both sessions involve players making and role playing as characters in a shared imaginary world that spans the Bay Area and has hundreds of players continuously involved in collaborating on the process of storytelling and adventure. These events also tie into the weekend events and other leagues which have been a tradition in the area for the past ten years. Players must learn to battle with safe larp weaponry, solve intricate story elements, role play as a wide variety of monsters and creatures of the world, and manage their resources carefully. LARP is helping transform the lives of children all across the Bay Area and beyond.

Fanwar Camps

(Palo Alto – Fall 2019)

Fall Hours 1:30-4:00pm & 4:30-7:00pm!

Information

Registration: New players can only join on the first event of the month.  All families must pre-register for this event. There are a limited number of spaces available. Registration and payment are required to save your spot. To register fill out registration form and e-mail to christophermelville@fanwar.com or turn in to Christopher Melville at a Fanwar event. Payment may be given to Christopher at a Fanwar event, sent via PayPal at the above email address, or sent in the mail (PO BOX 149, Graton CA 95444).  Make checks payable to Christopher Melville or Fanwar LARP and please write your child’s name on the check as well.

Reminder: We are a group of families that get together to hire a gamemaster. At most events, adults are required to remain on site. HOWEVER: because this event is during the week and is a succession of weekdays, this requirement is being waived for this event only, provided you have emergency contacts on file with the organizer and your child does not pose a significant risk to the flow, safety, or management of the event.  All children who do not have adults on hand to chaperon them must demonstrate that they are responsible and cooperative and cannot leave the premises for the duration of the camp hours with express written permission (see below).

Cost: Players sign up for one month at a time.  They must pay for the entire month on the first event of the month.  Players are not allowed pay for each day they attend, but must make one payment of the total they attend.  If they do not attend all the sessions, they may apply the credit to future events.  Trades for crafting of supplies and repair work is also accepted for those who wish to play a lot but keep the costs down.  See Christopher for projects to do as trade.

Location: The camp is being held at Mitchell Park, in Palo Alto.  We usually meet near the “Push” Statue, but may have to relocate depending on what other events are happening in the park that week.

What to bring: Students need to bring food (if attending both sessions), clothing for variation in the weather, as well as adequate sun protection and good athletic shoes.  Costumes and props are also a wonderful addition to our events.

Food and Water: As mentioned above, food and water are not provided, and students must bring their own food for this event each day if they are attending both sessions.

Schedule: We plan to meet every Wednesday and begin in the afternoon with the first session from 1:30pm-4:00pm and the second from 4:30pm-7:00pm.  Each session is a series of missions, training, and role-playing encounters.  (If you need early drop off or late pickup- contact me)

NOTE: The Payment System has changed.  Players must pay at the start of the month for the whole month (see me if this is a problem for you.  Credit is applied for any days did not attend that month.)  No paying per day.

Dates:

  • Aug (14th, 21nd, 28th) These dates are ONLY for the experienced players who have been playing already.  No new players.

  • Sept (4th,11th,18th,25th) New players are welcome so long as they attend from the first day of the month.

  • (2nd, 9th,16th,23th,30st ) New players are welcome so long as they attend from the first day of the month.
